works
This work- a series of experiments using BareConductive's "Touchboard"- was made during the Covid lockdowns, a time when I was cooking more than I ever have before. During this period, I realised I was using the process of preparing and consuming food as a kind of ritual. Mealtimes became one of the only ways that I structured time during the day in the absence of my usual routine.
I found that it was easy for me to bring an intentionality and mindfulness surrounding food, that I felt I couldn't engage with otherwise.
Theremin made using cake- inducing embodiment and heightening the act of touching and proximity.
One of the main methods I used to self-soothe was to cut up an apple really finely and eat it slice by slice. I did it the same way every time, and tried to challenge myself to slice the segments as thin as I could. Eating sliced apple reminds me of being a child.
I wanted to create an experience for myself that accented the polarity of this ritual- the grounded, soothing repetition and the jarring anxiety which prompts the act of the apple slicing.
It's simultaneously disembodied + embodied, mindless +focused.
